There's a particular magic to a restaurant that doesn't try too hard. Swoony's, Sal Lamboglia's November 2023 opening in Carroll Gardens, has it in spades. Located at 215 Columbia Street—a space Lamboglia himself worked in during the early 2000s—the bistro reads like a love letter to mid-century American dining without a trace of irony or performative nostalgia. The menu leans unapologetically into the familiar: clams casino studded with green peppers and bacon, an iceberg wedge that tastes like it should, short ribs au poivre bathed in pepper cream and sided with proper fries. This is food designed to make you feel at home, and it works.
The double smash burger deserves its reputation. Two thin patties kissed dark on a Portuguese bun, dressed with Thousand Island and American cheese—it's a master class in restraint and technique disguised as simplicity. Pair it with a martini on a Monday night and you understand what Swoony's is really selling: not destination dining, but the kind of reliable, unpretentious hospitality that builds neighborhoods. The Resy team named it their top meal of 2025, and it wasn't because of shock value. It was consistency. It was balance.
Wine Director Giovana Cucolo, who also oversees the list at Cafe Spaghetti, has assembled something thoughtful here—selections that understand the room and the food, neighborhood-appropriate without being boring. There's a generosity to how the wine list supports the menu, the same generosity that defines the entire operation. This is Lamboglia's second act in Carroll Gardens, and it reads less like expansion and more like completion. The Infatuation called it 'Carroll Gardens casual, at its finest,' and that's exactly the point.
What makes Swoony's matter right now is its refusal to apologize for simplicity. In a moment when every burger comes with a manifesto and every cocktail requires explanation, Lamboglia and his team have built something that trusts the fundamentals. The creamed spinach doesn't need a story. The lobster orzo doesn't need to be deconstructed. They just need to be done well, consistently, for the people who live three blocks away. That's harder than it looks.
Go early on a weeknight or go to the bar—both guarantee a seat and the best view of a kitchen operating at ease with itself.
